Sealing of molars

Treatment Explanation
The molars at the back of your mouth (the large chewing surfaces) naturally contain deep, narrow grooves and pits. Especially when these molars have just broken through, the grooves are difficult to keep clean with a toothbrush. Bacteria and food residues easily remain here, which significantly increases the risk of cavities. With sealing we apply a thin, protective layer of lacquer that prevents bacteria from settling in the grooves.

Who is sealing intended for?

Sealing is mainly used in children when the permanent (adult) molars emerge, usually around the age of 6, 11 or 12. The new molars are extra vulnerable to cavities at that age. Sometimes it is also decided in consultation to seal adult molars, depending on the shape of the grooves and the risk of cavities.

Quick and completely painless

  • Cleaning: First we carefully clean the tooth and grooves. Absolutely no drilling is involved.
  • Conditioning: We apply a liquid that roughens the glaze slightly so that the lacquer can adhere properly.
  • Sealing: The synthetic resin lacquer is applied to the grooves and hardens very quickly using a special blue curing lamp.

The treatment only takes a few minutes per tooth, is not painful at all and the result protects the molars for years to come!
