Remove plaque and tartar

Treatment Explanation
Plaque is a soft, invisible layer on your teeth that consists of bacteria. If plaque is not brushed away in time, it hardens into tartar. You can no longer remove tartar yourself. To prevent gingivitis or worse problems, it is important to have plaque and tartar professionally removed.

Why is removal important?

Tartar has a rough surface to which new bacteria (plaque) easily stick to. This can lead to irritated, bleeding or receding gums. By having tartar removed in a timely manner, you prevent gum inflammation (gingivitis) and further damage to the jaw bone (periodontitis).

How does the treatment work?

  • Inspection: We look at where the tartar is located, often this is around the neck of the tooth and behind the lower teeth.
  • Remove: We gently vibrate and scrape off the tartar using special ultrasonic instruments or hand instruments. This is usually not painful.
  • Polishing: We then polish the teeth so that the surface becomes nice and smooth again and plaque adheres less quickly. This also removes surface deposits and discolorations.
