Crowns and bridges
Treatment Explanation
If a tooth is severely damaged (due to tooth decay, a large old filling or a root canal treatment), a normal filling does not provide sufficient support. We then opt for a crown: a cap made of porcelain or zirconium that is placed over your own tooth like a sleeve. Is an entire tooth missing now? Then a bridge (a series of connected crowns) is an excellent, permanent solution.
Benefits of a crown or bridge
- Protection: A crown strengthens a severely weakened tooth or molar so that it does not break off.
- Sustainability: Well-maintained crowns and bridges last for many years, often decades.
- Aesthetics: Modern ceramic crowns are precisely reproduced in color and shape in a dental laboratory, making them indistinguishable from the real thing.
- Function: With a bridge you fill an open space in the jaw, allowing you to chew properly again and preventing surrounding teeth from growing crookedly.
The treatment process
Placing a crown is usually done in two appointments. During the first appointment we grind the tooth into the correct shape, make a scan or impression and place a temporary emergency crown. The impression is sent to the dental laboratory. You will return a few weeks later, we will remove the emergency crown and place the permanent porcelain crown in place with a special cement.
